HSA grounds get a spruce up

During half-term, parents and pupils were out in force to plant a wildlife-friendly hedge around the new gardening area at our Church Hill House site.

A variety of native species were selected, including Field Maple, Crab Apple, Dogrose, Hawthorn, Dogwood and Blackthorn. Many of the trees will have colourful blossoms in Spring and fruits and berries in Summer and Autumn.

HSA parent, Rhiannon, who took part in the day, said: “It was fun to be involved with the project. Hedgerows are so important to support local wildlife, and the children learned a lot.”

Once established, the hedgerow will provide food and habitat for birds and will attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Hedgehogs also love foraging along hedgerows, so they’re a great resource for nature all-round!

We’re looking forward to seeing – and hearing - the hedgerow come alive with wildlife, as well as providing an attractive backdrop to the gardening area, which is used by the school Gardening Club in summer term.

Head of Geography and Eco Council Co-ordinator, Miss Bunce, said: “It is wonderful to see the space be rejuvenated for such a fantastic cause. I am so grateful to the parent body who gave up their Saturday and I can't wait to see it develop.”

Head, Mr Ward, added: “We’re very lucky at HSA to have amazing outdoor spaces, not only is it great for health and wellbeing, our grounds allow pupils to enjoy so many opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Thank you to everyone involved.”
